TN western countries black is the col- "*■ our for mourning, but in China white is worn as the expression of grief. When a person dies his relatives and friends array themselves in long write robes, loosen their hair, and carry flowers and paper banners as they accompany the departed one to the cemetery. In the case of poor people the coffin, hewn out of wood and covered with an embroidered cloth, is borne on the shoulders of four men. If a child dies the mother dresses it In the garments it liked best, and all Its other clothes are buried with it.
