Luxford, S.M., in the Magistrates’ Court, Wellington, yesterday, in sentencing Maurice William Brown, a seaman, aged 28, to two separate terms of imprisonment on charges of converting a car valued at £2OO, the property of George Archibald McLean, to his use, and driving while intoxicated. He was also driving without a licence. Brown pleaded guilty. Sub-Inspector L>. J. McLean said that Brown arrived In the Dominion recently by the Awatea. On March 10, he had been drinking heavily, and took a car from outside an hotel and drove it in an erratic manner, colliding with another car, the driver of which jumped into a passing van and gave chase. Accused continued driving in an erratic manner and nearly knocked a cyclist over before being overhauled. He was taken to a police station, where he was examined by a doctor, who said he was not only intoxicated but in a state of drunkenness. At the time of the examination he had been frothing at the mouth, and was in an,almost mad condition with liquor. Accused was fortunate that he was not facing a more serious charge. On the conversion charge Brown .was sentenced to two months’ Imprisonment with hard labour. For driving while intoxicated he was sentenced to one month’s imprisonment, to follow the previous sentence, and he was prohibited from obtaining a licence for two years. For driving without a licence he was convicted and discharged. TWO MEN FINED AT DUNEDIN By Telegraph—Press Association. Dunedin, March 11. Two motorists from tbe country, John Herbert Granville Jones and Cyril -Earnscleugh McGinnis, for intoxication in charge of cars, were to-day each fined £lO.
