WOODVILLE GALLOPS
Dominion Special Service. Palmerston North, March 11. Much interest was taken yesterday morning at Woodville in the gallops of horses engaged at Trentham. They on the course proper, which was available for fast work near the rails. Francis Drake (Cosford) impressed in dashing over half a mile in 49 after taking 13 2-5 for the first furlong. I’. Atkins will ride him in the Thompson Handicap and this will add to his- admirers. He is a difficult horse for a boy to manage, as he showed at Wanganui, but he should run a mile with the best now he is seasoned and there is no doubt he is favourably treated wih 7.8 in the big event. Relative (Cavaney) travelled smoothly throughout her five furlongs in 1.4, the final three in 39. She has done well since the Taranaki meetings and will be a good ride for Atkins in the Tinakori Handicap on Thursday. Courtcraft continued his St. Leger preparation with a sound gallop over a mile and a quarter, coming home the last mile in 1.46 4-5, the first half of which, occupied 52 2-5. Courtcraft was swinging along easily in the concluding stages and appeared to be running well within himself. 'His races at Te Aroha have certainly sharpened him up. Golden Ridge (Cavaney) showed that he was improved by his race at Bulls by slipping over five furlongs with Son and Heir (Tracey) in 1.3 4-5, the first two in 26 3-5. On the plough, which was fast, Hazoor (Gilmore) ran a good seven furlongs, the last five in 1.5. He has done well since making his debut as a hurdler at Bulls and appears to be in great heart for his engagement in the Wairarapa County Cup to-morrow ,in which be will be ridden by S. Wilson. Hazoor has previously raced well on thia course and should run a aolid race for Mr. W. Howard Booth, the president of the club.
