CARTERTON RACES

Programme For To-day

FIELDS REVIEWED

(By

Carbine.)

The Carterton Racing Club will provide to-day’ h main interest for Wellington and Wairarapa i acegoers. Handy fields are engaged and a successful meeting is expected. The opening event, the Maiden Plate, is to start at 12.15.

The Trial Plate field is not a strong one and Girl Pat, Piastre and Allmetic are likely to be in his favour. If at his best Sunee would be very hard to beat in the Carrington Highweight Handicap. He lias been working pleasingly and is to be ridden by C. Thompson. Umpire, Lady Siegfried and Spender are suited by this class of event, and Lord Quick looks capable of holding his own under the higher scale.

Assisted by two races he had.at Napier Park, Lucullus Lad should be in excellent trim for the Wairarapa County Cup. Probably his weight will be lessened by the employment of an apprentice jockey. The turning course will be expected to suit him and he is likely to be one of the favourites. The recent form of Hazoor is not good. Helen Ford has done nothing of consequence since she won at the Wairarapa New Year meeting, but ehe cannot be neglected in to-day’s field. Good Sun and Cricket are useful and ehould manage the distance comfortably. If Impersonate is ridden by L. J. Ellis he will carry a fair amount of overweight. Conversion and Gay Artist will not lack friends in the Carterton Hack Handicap. Trebor was a winner at Wanganui, but failed at Bulls. Quake ran well enough at Napier to be given a first-class chance. Alloa, winner of two races at Wanganui, ought to run prominently in whichever race he contests, this or the Ta ratahi Hack Handicap. The Trentham pair Accomplice and Galteemore are likely to be well backed in the Gladstone Hack Handicap. Galteemore won a double at Carterton a year ago, but has not raced with much luck this season. However, he has performed consistently. He was given a short respite after the Ashhurst meeting in January and has shaped well since he resumed work. The distance ought to suit Accomplice. Rockingham is overdue for a turn of luck.

If Alunga does not contest the Bunny Memorial Handicap, Roaming may be made favourite, with Buster Brown the best fancied of the OtUers. Conversion and Free Gold are sure to be well supported in the Electric Hack Handicap, in which Diamond Cutter and Jewish Lad also may be in demand. It seems almost inevitable that scratchings will reduce the Taratahi Hack Handicap. The race is one which should suit'Alloa, Quake and Trebor. In the various events good backing may come for the following:— Maiden Plate: Piastre, Girl Pat, Allmetic. .

Carrington Highweight Handicap: Sunee, Umpire, Lady Siegfried. ■Wairarapa County Cup: Lucullus Lad, Good Sun, Cricket. Carterton Hack Handicap: Conversion. Alloa, Quake.
