Sir Roger Backhouse New Chief Of Staff London, February 1. Admiral Sir Roger Backhoflse has been appointed naval chief of staff in succession to Lord Chatfield, from September, 1938, to which date Lord Chatfield’s term has been extended. Admiral Sir Roger Backhouse was born in 1878. He served in the European War, in which he won the C.B. and C.M.G., and was Director of Naval Ordnance in 1920-22, Rear-Admiral commanding the 3rd Battle Squadron of the Atlantic Fleet, in 1926-27, and Third Sea Lord and Controller of the Navy in 1928-32. In 1932-34 he was ViceAdmiral commanding the First Battle Squadron of the Mediterranean Fleet. In 1935 he was appointed Commander-in-Chief of the Home Fleet shortly after his promotion to admiral's rank. Lord Chatfield has been First Sea Lord and Chief of the Naval Staff since 1933, and formerly commanded both the Atlantic and Mediterranean Fleets. He wijs flag-captain to Sir David Beatty at Heligoland, and served at Dogger Bank and Jutland, winning mention in dispatches ami decorations in both battles.
