WATERING OF COURSES

The Example Of Trentham

(By Caubine.) The success which attended the Wellington Racing Club's efforts .to keep its course and tracks in good order during the dry spell may have a generally beneficial effect. It is not too much to hope that other clubs will profit by the Trentham example. The more general the use. of water on courses becomes, the more widespread will be the benefit. What was done at Trentham helped to keep many horses on their feet. If the same thing were done generally there would be very few sore horses, ami all clubs would benefit. The cost is not prohibitive. Trentham gets the water from wells sunk on its property. The club possesses eight sprinklers. Tn addition to the outlay in wells, ami sprinklers, there is the bill for labour ami other items, and probably the charge against the recent meeting would be about £250. The outlay was well worth while, and no doubt was more than recouped. A few small fields through horses being scratched because of a hard course would have decreased the totalisator turnover ami the attendance to a degree which would have cost the club more than £250.

A.s the same cun apply to other chibs, they could do worse than give the subject consideration. So pleased were owners and trainers with what had been done that they sent a letter of appreciation and thanks to the Wellington club.. | TAKAPUNA ACCEPTORS Bv releirraph I’reo \ss<wiiitimi Auckland, January 26.
