Mrs. I). (1. Johnston. "Kincora,’’ Western Iliitt Hoad. Lower Hutt, entertained a number of AUms Joan Fenwick’s friends on Saturday afternoon at a tennis party. Aliss Fenwick will leave shortly with her aunt, Airs. Percival James, for a trip to England. The weather was ideal and the swimming pool, set amid lovely surroundings in the garden, proved a favourite rendezvous. Afternoon tea was served in the drawing-room, which was decorated with Howers. The guests were Mr. and Mrs. Claude Newton, Air. and Mrs. Dick Arthur. Alisses Jean Fenwick, Judy Allen. Janet Miles. Alargaret Salmond. Alessrs. lan Ewen. John Roberts, D. Fenwick. Airs. Johnston was also hostess yesterday at an all-day tennis party in honour of Airs. Hillas Symes, NxJson, who is the guest of her parents, Air. and Airs. C. Wheeler, Wellington. Lunch was served in the garden, which was an attractive picture in the bright sunshine. Home Counties Society.
The recently-formed Lower Hutt branch of the Home Counties Society celebrated the coming of Christmas in real old English style at the Returned Soldiers’ rooms on Saturday evening, when 120 guests' started the evening by sitting down to high tea. The long tables were gay with multi-coloured flowers. The lights were dimmed and a huge plum pudding soaked in brandy was carried in and lighted. Carols were sung. Air. G. Cowie conducting, with Air. Ryder at the piano. Later, “snapdragon.” an old English game, was played. The winners of the competition for the best paper hat were Mrs. D. Annear and Mr. E. Wilton. The committee was: Mr. G. The Eastbourne Borough Council at. its monthly meeting expressed itself as favourably disposed toward the principles set out in the Government's proposals for the amalgamation of local bodies. “Bethlehem’’ Presented.
At the conclusion of the evening service. conducted at the Lower Hutt Alethodist Church yesterday by the Rev. H. Peat, J. IJ. Afaunder’s oratorio "Bethlehem/’ was ituspiringly presented. The organist and choirmaster was Air. R. Horman, anti the soloists Airs. R. J. Laurenson. soprano, Mr. R. J. Laurenson, bass, and Air. H. Brusey, tenor. There was a large congregation.
