The report of the librarian tor the month of November submitted to last night's meeting of the Lower Hutt Borough Council showed a marked increase over the return for November of last year. Books issued totalled 4921, compared with 3214, there were 39 new subscribers compared with 24, and the total number of subscribers was 1010 compared with 530.
Cables Damaged. Six workmen from the Post and Telegraph Department were engaged last night at Unper Hutt in repairing damage to underground cables caused through their being struck by the picks of men engaged in kerbing and channelling work.
Building Permits. Thirty-three building permits were issued by the Lower Hutt Borough Council during November valued at £21,834, compared with 29 and £16,230 in November last year. Double Garages.
The following clause in the report of the works committee was adopted at last night’s meeting of the Lower Hutt Borough Council : “The question of the erection of double garages has been exercising the minds of the members of. the committee for some time, and after giving this matter due consideration it has to recommend that instructions be given
that no.permits be issued for the erection of double garages in front yards.in the special residential area without prior consideration by the committee.”
Upper Hutt Half-Day. A special meeting of the Upper Hutt Borough Council will be held on January 24 la consider the fixing of the weekly half-holiday.
Lower Hutt Fire Brigade. Reports covering two fviir-weekly periods of the fire brigade’s activities stated that the brigade had been called out on 20 occasions. Ten of these were gorse andffiush fires, one was a chimney fire, five were false alarms and four were property fires. Three of the calls were attended to without calling out the whole brigade. The attendances had been satisfactory and the motors and appliances, street alarms and house bells were all in good order. Blockhouse Reserve.
The Upper Hutt Borough Council’s period of control of the historic blockhouse having expired, it decided last night to advise the Department of Lands and Survey that it would accept control for a further five years.
