AWAPUNI SCHOOLING

Promising Maiden Dead Dominion Special Service. I’almerstou North, December 20. Florence Mills, Wagner, Quadroon and The Crooner, who leave to-night for Auckland, where they are engaged to race next week, were given light pace work at Awapuni this morning and the quartet appeared to be in splendid condition to go north. A very pleasing display over four hurdles was given by Tail Light (Parkes), whose companion was Skyful I McDowell). Tail Light’s pace ou the flat made him shine alongside the Sky Blue gelding, but lie took every obstacle in his stride, jumping fast and cleanly. It is probable he will make his debut as a hurdler at Marton on New Year's Day. First Half (0. Thomson) jumped three hurdles carefully but safely. He is the Centrepiece—Zamanck gelding in Thorneon's charge. Aurora’s Love (Thomson) did a round of pace work and then jumped four hurdles. She had plenty of pace on all the way and though she picked slightly at the second she jumped the other, hurdles flawlessly and is obviously gaining confidence with her racing experience over hurdles. Mr. C. Boyle had the misfortune this morning to lose his promising maiden Barcelona, who created a good impression in his only outing to date, at Lovin. Barcelona, who was a five-year-old halfbrother to Gibraltar, being by Raceful from Alvarez, was found dead in his paddock. He was to have raced at the Manawatu meeting next week and had improved considerably since lie started at Levin. DE SOTO CASE Stewards’ Finding To Stand By Telegraph—Press Association. Christchurch, December 20. The judicial stewards of the New Brighton Trotting Club to-day reopened the De Soto case and after lone deliberation and the hearing of fresh evidence decided that the finding of the stewards at the club’s iheeting ou December 4 that C. Johnston (owner), J. Pringle (driver) and the horse De Soto be disqualified for three months for not trying to win should stand. The appeal was first dealt with by the New Zealand Trotting Association last Friday, when fresh evidence was heard, and it was decided to refer the case back to the New Brighton club.
