WAIPA HACK CUP

Prospects Of Kena SEVERAL LIKELY IMPROVERS Dominion Special Service. Auckland, December 16. One of the interesting features of the Waipa Racing Club’s meeting at le Awamutu on Saturday should lie the contest for the Huck Cup Handicap. J.be race ia run over a distance ot eight furlongs and a half and the field includes several useful and improving young horses. Pride of place is occupied by Kaepata, who has been disappointing in his two races since registering a win and a second at Whangarei. On occasions Raeputii has given the impressiou that he might make a very capable handicap horse and on others he has run moderately. However, he is equal to a good effort when he displays his best and it is in his favour that he runs on well. Jack Tar and Lady Meath. The form of Jack Tar in his last start was slightly disappointing, but he may have been feeling the effects of a hard race two days before. He has worked nicely in the meantime and may make amends. Jack Tar has previously raced well at the distance, having run second to Valamito in the Hikutaia Hack Cup at Faeroa last season. The Irish-bred Lady Meath is improving with every race and may prove one of the hardest to peat. She is also in the Ohiiupo Hack Handicap, but the fact that she was galloped n mile on Tuesday indicates that she is likely to compete in the Hack Cup. Factors that should favour Lady Meath are that she will be racing on her home track and has the brilliance to secure a forward position early, which is important on the turning course. • _ The improving Kena hud the misfortune to be left standing at the post at his last appearance, when he was strongly fancied after running a goal fourth in the Waikato Hack Cup. Kena has been working pleasingly and should take considerable beating, as he is capable of running the distance right out. Te Monowai has another engagement in the Kihikihi Hack Handicap, the distance of which may suit her better. However, she will not be friendless if reserved for the Hack Cup in spite of her defeat by Forest Acre at Te Rapa last month. Gay Sister ran third in the Waikato Hack Cup last month to Parquet and Brown Lap and a similar effort would give her an undeniable chance. Chance for Prince Rangi. The racing he had at Te Rapa last month is likely to have been beneficial to Prince Rangi, who should be more forward now. Prince Rangi recorded several good performances last season and will only require to reproduce his best to be prominent at the finish. Sly Fox is a 1 hree-ypar-old full-brother to Sporting Blood and is reputed to be a good galloper, although he has yet to prove it in public. The form of Diacquedoon does not inspire confidence, and a better prospect might be Balinavar, although there is some doubt about him starting, Beverley is an improver who may win at any time, and Cometarium appears to be doing better lately. Tralee Rose and Sockettes are the other candidates, but recent form does not say a great deal for their chances. The favourites may be Kena, Lady Meath and Jack Tar.
