TOWN v. COUNTRY

Rain Prevents Completion

Of Cricket Match

Heavy rain yesterday prevented the annual cricket match between Town and Country elevens in the Wellington Pluuket Shield area from being resumed, and the match had to be abandoned. This was a disappointment to many enthusiasts, who had been looking forward with interest to the second day’s play. On the opening day on Wednesday, the Country eleven scored 253, and dismissed the Town side for 128, thus securing a lead of .125 runs on the first innings. Considering that such noted players as D. A. It. Moloney, N. Galliehan, M. A. O’Brien, A. W. McCoy, and B. L. Christensen were .not available, the Country once again proved that they can field a respectable side. Had 0. K. Parsloe, S. Ward, B. McLeod, B. W. Tindill, and B. D. Blundell been able to turn out for the Town eleven, the Country team would have had a harder task this year. It is time that this match was given higher status, and three days set apart for if. Bven the one day’s play on Wednesday served to show that in T. L. Pritchard, the Country possesses a bowler who .could materially assist the Wellington Plunket Shield team. Though he secured only one wicket for 39 on Wednesday, Pritchard showed that he can bring the ball back sharply from the off at fast-medium pace. The ball with which he clean bowled W. S. Coltman whipped sharply back from the off, and left the ex-Sydney player standing. Pritchard also bowled Crawford early in the game, but that time he dragged over the line, and Umpire Watts no-balled him. Pritchard also made 19 with the bat in workmanlike fashion. The mutch this week also .served to show that in W. Bain, the youthful Kilbirnie left-hander, Wellingfon has developed one of the most promising batsmen for some years past. His 59 not out was a sterling display of sound defence, coupled with finished scoring shots. The value of his innings can be realised when it is stated that the next highest score ou the side was R. Crawford’s modest 11.
