Reports Of Committees Approved

On the recommendation of the tramways committee the Wellington City Council at its meeting last night decided to duplicate the tram track at Church Hill, Karori, at an estimated cost of £1450. The works committee’s recommendation that road adjustment work be undertaken immediately at the intersection of Featherston Street and Lambton Quay, at a cost of £lOOO, provided money was available, was approved. Recommendations to extend the footpath at Evans Bay Road to Point Jerningham, and to extend the city water supply to the Wainui-o-mata public hall, were also approved. The reserves committee recommended and the council agreed that the Hutt County Council be requested to prohibit parking near the entrance to the wharf at Day’s Bav.

Approval was given for a charge of 3d. to be made for the use of a locker at the bathing pavilion at Oriental Bay. The Bov Scouts’ Association was granted the use of a camp site at Trelissick Park free of charge during the pleasure of the council, on conditions to be imposed by the director of parks. Re-paving Streets. “A considerable amount of maintenance work has been undertaken to woodblocked and paved streets in the city and this work will be continued throughout the paving season,” stated the report of the works committee, which was approved. “This work will be continued throughout the paving season. Wood-blocked streets which require replacement will be re-paved with asphaltic concrete and streets not at present sealed will receive attention as funds permit. “It is desirable that the whole of the paved areas of the city, including the wood-blocked areas and the asphaltic concrete and surface-sealed areas, should have special attention during the next two or three years in order to bring them up to first-class condition in time for the centennial celebrations in 1940.” Traffic Recommendations.

The by-laws eosinmittec recomemnded and the council agreed that suggestions received from business regarding the control of parking in thiFcity be referred to the special committee appointed to consider traffic control generally and sites for parking stations, and that the personnel of the committee be amended to include the town clerk as chairman, the city solicitor, city engineer and the general manager of the tramways department.

The council approved of a suggestion that the Minister of Transport lie requested to alter the regulations to provide for pedestrian crossing places to be marked with permanent materials. Sanction was given a recommendation that in order to meet the increased costs of operation an increase in taxi-cab fares be approved. City Milk Sales. The milk committee reported that, excluding the milk supplied to schools, milk sales for the month averaged 5898 gallons daily, this being 392 gallons or 7.11 per cent, in excess of the sales for the corresponding month of last year. By the same comparison cream sales showed an increase of 19.18 per cent. Milk sales to nearby farmers averaged 36 gallons daily as compared with nine gallons for the corresponding month last year. During the month 29,140 gallons of milk were supplied to schools. The abattoir committee reported that a letter had been received from the Wellington Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals which expressed gratification at the improvements which had been effected in the methods of slaughtering cattle and pigs at the city abattoirs. Approval was also expressed of the installation of a Weinberg pen for the slaughtering of meat for the Jewish community.

It was considered by the society that the Wellington abattoirs were now the most up to date in the Dominion, and the council was congratulated on the porgressive policy that had been carried out.
