"AT HOME"
Chairman of Harbour Board And Mrs. McGowan
Beautiful pink hydrangeas and hothouse palms decorated the foyer and the stairway leading to the boardroom of the Wellington Harbour Board yesterday afternoon, when the chairman of the board, Air. D. J. McGowan, and Mrs. AlcGowan were “at home” to members of the board and their wives, past chairmen, members of the executive, and a number of their friends.
The guests were received by Air. and Mrs. AlcGowan, the latter wearing an ensemble of heavy navy blue silk, the knee-length coat trimmed with pleating, and a wide-brimmed hat of navy straw.
The boardrootu was looking most attractive. The imposing semi-circular table, round which so many momentous matters have been discussed, was covered with tablecloths of ecru lace and here and there were tall vases of purple broom and stately irises, shallow bowls of (log roses, clusters of arurn lilies and deep brass vases of thrift. At the back of the room hung three fl ags —the Royal Naval Reserve ensign, the New Zealand Mercantile Alarlue flag, and the interesting blue and white emblem of thc Wellington Harbour Board.
The afternoon passed in friendly talk over tea and sherry, and many people took the opportunity of looking at the Harbour Board’s wonderful collection of photographs, depicting Wellington and the harbour since the days when the first settlers landed. Another valuable possession of the board that was inspected with interest was the huge relief map of the harbour and the surrounding district, which is kept under glass at one si'de of the room. Among those present were: The Hon. P, and Airs. Fraser, the Hon. R. and Mrs. Semple, the mayor of Wellington, Mr. T. C. A. Hislop, and Airs. Hislop; Lady Norwood, Air. and Airs. T. R.
