BOXING REFEREE

Mr. Alan Maxwell’s Career Mr. Alan Maxwell, who was recently appointed to the position of official referee to the Wellington Boxing Association, has been connected with boxing during the pas.t 30 years. Starting under the wing Of Professor Jack Stagpoole, Mr. Maxwell won the Taranaki lightweight title in 1909, and the New Zealand title, in addition to the medal for the ipost scientific boxer, in 1911. As a professional Maxwell fought many good men, Including Porter, Hagerty, Coo_k, Gault. Bromwich, Jones, Wing Kee, O Neill and Hannan, and it was after fighting a draw with Tim Tracy in Wanganui for the lightweight title that lie was recognised as the title-holder owing to the retirement of Tracy. During the. war period he won the lightweight title of Egypt during his sojourn in that country. Although still instructing the youth of to-day, Mr. Maxwell is better known as “third man in the ring,” and during the past fifteen years has refereed some of the most important fights in the Dominion, including many of Heeney's battles, and that between Lloyd and Cook for the Australasian heavyweight title in Wellington. But boxing is not Mr. Maxwell’s only sport, for a glance over his record shows that he won the West Coast high-dive championship in 1909, and he has been actively connected with life-saving for a long period, being the possessor of both bronze and surf medallions.
