VALUABLE ORE

Lode In Coromandel Range 500 oz OF GOLD TO TON Orc of a very high value, approximately £3500 a ton, was referred to by the director of the Thames School of Mines, Mr. H. Crawford, in a report. The director said there was as much as 500 oz. of gold to the ton of ore, and the silver content was also very high. The report stated that more than 2001 b. of picked telluride ore from Tokatea, Coromandel, was at present being treated in the plant, and the richer values would be extracted in the new experimental plant recently installed. The ore came from what was known as Ruhr’s Leader, near the crest of the Tokatea range, about four miles from Coromandel. The reef was averaging 4in. to sin. in width, and was located at Mayn’s Head, about 400 ft. in the hill. About 701 b. to 801 b. of the stone was being treated in the new plant, the rest being crushed in tlie battery. The results were subject to cyanide treatment. The ore was what was known in the early days of mining as young gold, said Mr. Crawford, and was always thrown away over the tips, as it was considered that its presence was a sure indication of a wealthy patch of gold being nearby. The stone was as heavy as lead, and the gold was not visible to the eye. Mr. Crawford added that it was impossible to say bow far the leader extended into tbe hill, but the stone **as being brought to Thames to be crushed and treated under his supervision. The claim was being worked under the Government’s mining scheme.
