Uniforms For Schoolboys (From “Tlie Dominion,” September 30, 1912.) The decree has gone forth that the boys in the third and fourth forms at the Auckland Grammar School shall fall iuto line with the majority of secondary schools of the Dominion and wear a uniform consisting of blue shirt, shorts and black stockings without coloured tops. The headmaster, Mr. J. W. Tibbs, is of opinion that no restriction should be put on the dress of the boys in the fifth and sixth forms.
Two sandwichmen, clothed in the orthodox prison clothes, stalked the main streets of Wellington on Saturday bearing advertisement boards with reference to thcWaihi miners, who preferred gaol to entering into a bond to keep the peace. The sight these men presented, instead of gaining sympathy with the misled miners, only succeeded in creating disgust at the methods pursued by tlie Federation of Labour. "The regulation prison dress is a State uniform for those who have been condemned for an offence against the laws of the country," said a visitor from Australia, “and a private individual has no more right to wear it in the street than you or I have to wear a constable's uniform. I wonder that the police or the mayor do not interfere!” [About 25 years ago prisoners used to be marched through the streets of Wellington regularly.]
Tn celebration of the fifth birthday of “The Dominion’’ newsjinper, the editor (Mr. C. W. Earle) entertained the literary. staff and heads of departments at a dinner in the Hotel Windsor on Saturday evening.
