Returns On Leave
Dominion Special Service. Auckland, September 27.
On four months’ leave of absence from service with the Royal Air Force in Egypt, Flying Officer W. L. Collett arrived from Sydney-by the Awatea to visit his home in Poverty Bay. Mr. Collett left for England’ to join the Royal Air Force in 1933, after having gained his early training with the Gisborne Aero Club. He spent a year at No. 3 Flying Training School at Grantham, and was then posted to No. 14 Bombing Squadron at Amman, in Transjordania. lie was next transferred to No. 45 Bombing Squadron, stationed near Cairo.
During the Italian invasion of Abyssinia, Mr. Collett did considerable flying near the Abyssinian border and also went as far as the Libyan border. He took part in an aerial survey of Cyprus in 1936, and in January of this year took part in a trial reinforcement flight from Egypt to the North-West Frontier of India. Since April he has been instructor at No. 4 Flying Training School at Abu Sueir, near the Suez Canal.
