Sex and Life
Sir, —One cannot but gasp with astonishment at the “masterly approach” to the subject of sex made by Dr. Bu'tchers and reported in thtes morning’s “Dominion.” , The strength of a nation depends on the family as a unit. Dr. Butchers envisages women taking an equal part with men in politics, the administration of law and in the Public Service, in general, throwing their weight about. How much better the world would be if-women once again took up their real duty, that of bearing and training a family of healthy, happv children, caring for them in their infancy, guiding them in childhood and protecting them in adolescence. . The mother of a family should be. and is, in thousands of homes, loved and revered by the husband and her children. She seeks no limelight, her name does not appear in any one of the committees of movements, but she lives nobly and goes down in the twilight of life surrounded by the love and gratitude of those she bore. , , Women, in the parlance of the ring, have thrown in the towel. A large number 'are faithful to their marriage vows as long as they think fit; their children, if any, are neglected spiritually, morally and physically. What are the mothers of these boys and girls doing about it? Nothing, except talking. Dr. Butchers lays the blame on the liquor trade, armaments, profit-making and war, and the lack of women in politics. Every boy and girl i s born into a hard world full of temptation to do the wrong thing, but if trained and nurtured by.a good mother in a good home they will come through well and be a credit and a source of strength to the country. It is up to the women. —I am, etc., B. Wellington, September 24.
