WOMEN'S STUDY CIRCLE

Interesting Talk On Astronomy The Women’s Study Circle met recently in the New Zealand Educational Institute room to hear a very interesting and instructive lecture given by Mr. A. C. Gifford on astronomy. Mr. Gifford likened the study of astronomy to that of history, in that both were so vast in their application. One lecture would suffice merely to touch the fringes of the science of astronomy, but he hoped, with the aid of charts and photographs, to give his hearers some idea of the wonders of the solar system. Mr. Gifford mentioned the amazing progress made by astronomy in recent years, and showed photographs of stars seen both by the naked eye and through the telescope. Those of the nebulae were among the most beautiful, and showed clearly the usual circular rotation taken by all the heavenly bodies. At the conclusion the president, Mrs. Lineker, thanked the speaker for a very fine and interesting address. Health Camp Auxiliary The monthly meeting of the health camp women’s auxiliary was held in St. John’s Hall, Vivian Street, Mrs. E. R. Myers presiding. The honorary secretary gave a full report of the year’s work, this being the last meeting of the financial year. A vote of thanks was passed to Mrs. Williams, Day’s Bay, on behalf of the Day’s Bay bridge circle, for the consistent help to the funds. The next meeting, ou August 9, will be held at the home of Mrs. E. R. Myers, president, when the election of officers for the coming year will take place. Nursing Guild of St. John There was a good attendance of members at the committee meeting of the District Nursing Guild of St, John, Mrs. W. J. Osborn being in the chair. Sister Collins was congratulated on completing 10 years’ service with the guild. The usual routine business of the guild was dealt with. The committee expressed thanks to all who had sent donations. Use a small cake of hard soap, instead of the usual pin cushion, in which to keep needles. This will prevent them rusting.
