CRIPPLED CHILDREN

Wellington Society Meets An address on the work of his department in relation to the disabled child, was given by Dr. A. G. Butchers, headmaster of the Correspondence School, at the monthly meeting of the Wellington branch of the Crippled Children Society recently. In the absence of Mr. Gordon J. Reid, Mr. Ernest Hunt was in the chair. Dr. Butchers said that 2600 children were enrolled in his school, and of these about 260 were crippled or disabled. He exhibited specimens of handicrafts work done by these children, and referred to the necessity for personal attention in the homes. The Wellington branch is to make recommendations to the conference of the New Zealand Crippled Children Society, which is to take place on August 17. The hon. secretary, Mr. J. Meltzer, submitted a report on the recent infantile ■paralysis epidemic, and gave details of a comparison of mortality rates with previous epidemics. In this connection it was also decided to keep in close touch, with the Wellington Public Hospital authorities concerning the instalment of the new pool. It was also decided by the executive to make a further drive for membership. The report of the welfare officer for the month was as follows: —Visits paid, 36; visits received at office, 80; medical attention arranged, 19correspondence education arranged, 5; vocational training arranged, 3; surgical boots supplied, 7 ; board found, 1; employment found, 1; sent to health camp, 1. Ten new cases were registered with the branch during the month, and three cases from other branches are receiving medical attention in Wellington, and are under the care of the Wellington branch. Mrs. Richardson, masseuse, was thanked for her offer to assist voluntarily with massage in the homes of crippled children.
