CERCLE FRANCAIS

Comedy Presented at Recent Meeting

Madame E. Finlayson was in charge of the programme at the recent meeting of Hie Cercle Francais, which was largely attended. An exceptionally entertaining comedy, “Cos Dames aux Chapeaux Verts,” was presented. The piece is a dramatisation of Germaine Acremant’s novel by Albert Acrema.nL The playwright has been unusually successful—most people probably preferring the comedy to the book. Madame Bendall introduced the play in a short speech calculated to stimulate anticipation. The roles were taken by Madame Finlavson, the attractive heroine who comes to live with her four spinster cousins (represented by Madame Young, Misses Cecily Mead, Frances Huntington, and Coralie Smythson) ; Miss U Tewsley, the privileged servant who always “joins in”; Professor Boyd-Wilson, the faithful pedagogue who marries the youngest of the four sisters when an early romance is revived and who unexpectedly develops o poetic turn, comparing Arlette (the voting cousin) to a rosebud, growing in the 'shelter of four roses m full bloom (the four sisters who are “Ces Dames aux Chapeaux Verts ) ; Dr. Carbery (father of the heroines lover (Dr. Keys) ; Professor F. L. W. Wood, the kindly priest, and Professor F. Miles, concierge at tbe college. .1 his is the last time this season that the Cercle Francais will have the pleasure Of seeing Professor Wood assisting with a programme, as he will leave at the end of the week on a hurried trip to Europe. A dainty dance by Misses it rances Muter and Margaret McLay was encored, their old-fashioned costumes (ot. which one accessory was a tricky little Victorian umbrella) being greatly admired. . , , ~ Madame Bendall directed the conversation circle, and Miss Huntingtoil supervised supper. Mrs. Leo du Chateau (wearing green satin with silver coat) received, and among the visitors were Commander Vitali, some members of the Italian Club, and Mi. and Mrs. G. H. Swan.
