PIONEER CLUB

Garden Circle Meets Members of the garden circle of the Pioneer Club assembled for their meeting and lecture recently. Mrs. R. Arlow was the speaker, and drew the attention of her hearers to the beauty of the newer varieties of montbretias, instancing “His Majesty” and “Una.” Arctotis in several fine shades were displayed and correct cultural methods given for their successful growth. Buddleias, nanhoensis, and alternifolia, dianthu’s “Loveliness,” lavender and white colchicums, the small double michaelmas daisy, “Little Pink Lady,” and the improved thrift, were mentioned as being treasures for the garden. Mrs. Arlow also gave a demonstration on the wiring of flowers for Victorian posies and sprays. At the conclusion of the instructive address, a vote of thanks was passed to the speaker by Mrs. E. J. Righton, who presided. A display which proved interesting and instructive was given by Mrs. J. J. Reich, who showed specimens of the grevilleas, asplenifolia, rosmafimifolia, dimorpha, and thelemanniana, also the clematis cirrahosa (baleariea), on the “display” stand. The competition for a Victorian posy resulted in Mrs. K. McDonald gaining first and second prizes, both of which were donated by Mrs. Righton.
