1940 EXHIBITION

Mr. E. Anscombe Appointed Architect COMMITTEES SET UP The New Zealand Centennial Exhibition of 1940 may now be said to be fairly under way. At a meeting of the directors held yesterday afternoon, all the directors now in Wellington were present. The chairman, Mr. T. C. A. Hislop, presided. At the conclusion of the meeting the chairman announced that Mr. Edmund Anscombe, head of the firm of E. Anscombe and Associates, architects, of Wellington, had been appointed architect for the exhibition. Later on a young associate architect may be appointed to assist Mr. Anscombe. Mr. Anscombe was the architect for the Dunedin and South Seas Exhibition, held in Dunedin in 1925-26. For many years he has taken a very live interest in exhibitions, no matter whore they have been held, and has perhaps one' of the best libraries in the world on exhibitions, with particular regard to the architecture of the buildings and lay-out of grounds. His works on this subject form an extensive and comprehensive collection. During recent weeks lie has had an exhibition of these works in his offices, and many visitors have been surprised at its extent. Yesterday’s meeting also appointed the following committees: — Works committee: Messrs. John Read (chairman), C. Todd, R. H. Nimmo, J. W. Heenan, D. J. McGowan, W. A. -Appleton, and Frank Campbell. Publicity and printing committee: Messrs. C. W. Earle, W. A. Appleton, and F. Johnson, with power to add to their number. Space and exhibits committee: Messrs. C. J. B. Norwood, W. McLay, F. Campbell, and F. Johnson, with power to add to their number. The matter of arranging the appointment of honorary officers such as patron, president, and commissioners was left in the hands of the chairman. A motion was passed expressing appreciation of the work done by Mr. E. P. Norman as secretary and Mr. B. O. Peterson as treasurer during the interim period preceding the appointment of a permanent secretary-treasurer.
