TRIBUTE TO FAT LAMB TRADE

“Wonderful Place in’ World Markets”

On a brief business trip to New Zealand, mainly connected with the opening of the new A.M.P. Society’s building at Palmerston Nort h this week, Sir Frederick Tout, a director of tbe society, a prominent grazier of New South Wales, and a director of Sun Newspapers, arrived at Wellington iu the Awatea yesterday.

Interviewed by "The Dominion” Sir Frederick said that during the last 12 months it was wonderful how New Zea laud and Australia bad become so iu-surance-minded. “It is a matter for congratulation not only to the individual but.to tbe Dominion and Commonwealth generally,” he said. There was a 'boom in life aud endowment policies, he continued, and insurance business had reflected this to an enormous degree.

As a ■wheat farmer and wool-grower, Sir Frederick said he was very much Interested in the problems of' primary production and in the progress the industry had made in both countries. He considered that wool prices obtained recently in New Zealand and Australia, would remain at that high level. Discussing trade relations between the Dominion and ’ Commonwealth he said It Was regrettable that there were embargoes of any nature on either side. "I believe there are many among the producers of each country who would like to see a greater reciprocity in our respective trades,” he said, “and I for one hope that in time this will become established for good. “New Zealand has won for herself a wonderful place in world markets with her fat- lamb trade,” he continued, ‘‘and her products in this direction are a great tribute to the country and to those interested in it. It is true that Australia has produced a number of very fine lambs; but Australia is a very large country with the greater part of furmable land put to the best use for wool producing. There is, however, a certain limited area for the production of fat Jambs, but we have some way to go Io improve our breeds before we can contend seriously for New Zealand's well-earned title.”
