FASCIST THREAT

Measures Against Iron Guard in Rumania PRINCE’S BANISHMENT Two-day Secret Session of Inner Cabinet Circle PRESIDENT’S DECLARATION By Telegraph.—Press Assn. —Copyright. (Received April 18, 6.30 p.m.) London, April 17. Tile Bucharest correspondent of the "Daily Telegraph” says the inner circle of the Rumanian Cabinet held a secret session lasting almost two days at the house of the President the Council of Ministers, M. George Tatarescu. At it measures to deal with the Fascist Iron Guard’s threatening attitude were discussed. M. Tatarescu declared that the police would take the strongest action against any demonstration in.favour of the banished brother of King Carol, Prince Nicholas. Professor Demeter Gerota, surgeon to the Royal Family and a member of the Iron Guard, has been arrested and charged with sedition. M. Philipescue, a Conservative member of tlie Chamber of Deputies, in a speech attacked the Iron Guard and declared that every Iron Guard outrage would he answered for tenfold by reprisals by the Democratic Party. Meanwhile, General Cantaeuzenu, commander of the Iron Guard, at a meeting of the guard read a letter from Prince Nicholas stating that Nicholas had not refused to obey King Carol, and also that he had not renounced his rank, but had been degraded by the King. Prince Nicholas, the onlj' brother of King Carol, resigned his rank and titles on April 11 ns a protest against King Carol’s refusal to recognise the validity of his morganatic marriage with a divorcee, Madame Saveanu. King Carol had also refused to legitimise the son of the union, and to give him the title of prince, and his mother the title of princess. A climax was reached in the dispute when Prince Nicholas was appointed to represent Rumania at the Coronation o£ King George VI. Prince Nicholas declared that he would accept the appointment only on condition that his wife should accompany him as a Rumanian princess. The quarrel between King Carol and Prince Nicholas, which was a long-stand-ing one, had been aggravated by differences between the King’s friend, Madame Lupescu, and Madame Saveanu. A political complexion has been introduced by Prince Nicholas’s close association with the Fascist organisation the Iron Guard.
