TURNBULL LIBRARY
Appointment of New Librarian MR. C. R. H. TAYLOR Mr. C. R. H.' Taylor has been appointed librarian of the Turnbull Library in succession to Mr. Johannes C. Andersen, whose retirement was recently announced. Mr. Taylor, who is in his early thirties, is a son of Mr. T. D. Taylor, of Wellington, and the late Mrs. Taylor. He was educated at Wellington College and the Wairarapa High School, whence he proceeded to Canterbury University College, taking the degree of B.A. in 1928, and in the same year the Diploma in Journalism. The following year he graduated M.A.. taking honours in economics. As part of this degree he wrote an Economic History of Canterbury Land Settlement, which received high commendation from the English examiners. From 1923 to 1929 he was on the staff of the Christchurch Lands Office, which he left to become librarian of the Agricultural Department, Wellington. Having been . appointed assistant librarian at the Turnbull Library toward toward the close of 1933, Mr. Taylor was awarded a Carnegie Library Fellowship which enabled him to study library methods in the United States, England and Europe. Consequent upon Mr. Taylor’s tour abroad, the library benefited to the extent of several hundred volumes presented by various institutions in America and Europe. This material was especially strong in literature devoted to printing, a subject to which Mr. Taylor has devoted considerable study, principally on the historical side. This, too, was a favourite aspect of the late Mr. Turnbull’s book-collecting, and last year Mr. Taylor was able to take advantage of the library’s richness in this direction to devote to the first of a series of exhibitions that are becoming features of the institution, an exposition of books depicting the history of printing. The handsomely produced and interesting booklet issued on that occasion was the work of Mr. Taylor. Of Mr. Taylor’s literary work, probably the best known is a book on the Gothic architecture and a history of the Canterbury Provincial Buildings, published in 1929.
