TIDIER BEACHES
City Councillor’s Plea £ The type of buildings on some of the beaches around Wellington was the subject of a complaint by Cr. R. MeKeen at a meeting of the Wellington City Council on Thursday night. “Some of the baches one sees on a tour of the bays are simply hideous,” said Cr. MeKeen. “People are living in sheds at Breaker Bay. A general tidying up would not be out of place, especially in view of the fact that a big exhibition is to lie held here in a few years’ time. We want our city to look at its best.” The Mayor, Mr. T. C. A. Hislop: What is it you want the council to do? Cr. MeKeen: I am just wondering whether we could not co-operate with the harbour board and the Defence Department in an effort to remove some of these unsightly buildings and to tidy up the waterfront generally. It was decided to ask the reserves committee to report as to which bodies should be approached. Cr. P. Butler said that the filth floating on the water at Oriental Bay recently was absolutely disgusting. Surely it could have been scooped up . with a net.
The inayor said that the reserves committee would see what could be done.
