SMUTS FROM LAUNDRY

Petone Residents Complain of Nuisance ABATEMENT TO BE SOUGHT A nuisance caused by smut and soot from a steam laundry was complained of in a petition from residents of Tory. Adelaide, and Cuba Streets which came before the Petone Borough Council at a meeting last night. Accompanying the petition was a cardboard box containing partially burned shavings from the laundry chimne.v swept up on a recent day. The company concerned is to be asked to abate the nuisance.

The mayor, Mr. A. Scholefield, said it seemed to happen periodically. The council had previously made representations to the company, which resulted in a temporary remedy.

The inspector, Mr. G. A. Booth, said the trouble was that the wrong method of stoking was in use. and the shavings were not properly burnt before they went up the chimney. It was suggested that a spark arrester was needed. The mayor: The remedy lies with them ; it is not for us to suggest a remedy. We should write to the firm drawing attention to the position, and instruct the inspector to follow up the letter.

Cr. A. M. Macfarlane said he thought they should be more emphatic. lie referred Io a similar trouble in Eastbourne in which case action was taken and a conviction secured.

Cr. D. M. Dickson recalled legal action the council had taken against the same laundry four years ago. On his motion it was decided to ask the company to take steps to abate the nuisance or the council would take action.
