PIONEER CLUB

Garden Circle Members of the Garden Circle of the Pioneer Club assembled last week to listen to an interesting address on the culture of dahlias and carnations by Mr. I-I. Jones, Miramar. The speaker had brought many well-grown dahlias to illustrate his talk. The “Pompom” and "Charm” varieties in many shades so useful for indoor decoration were dealt with more extensively, as were also the larger ones, such as “Daily Mail,” ‘‘Jersey Beauty” and “The World,” which are undoubtedly very “showy” for the garden. The dahlia owes its generic name to a Swedish botanist, named Dahl. Mr. Jones also imparted much valuable information to members from his store of knowledge on carnations.

Miss M. Cooper, who presided, thanked Mr. Jones for his informative talk. The competition for the month, a collection of dahlias, brought forth the most outstanding display of these resplendent flowers that the circle has yet exhibited. Mrs. A. Sinclair’s basket of beautifully grown blooms was awarded the prize donated by Mrs. E. Henderson. Miss A. Kane, president of the club, wa.s present for a brief time to see the brilliant display on the exhibition table. Afternoon tea was served.
