HUNT FOR STOWAWAY

Funnel Chosen as HidingPlace MAN ARRESTED ON WHARF Having eluded his captors for about four hours, a man who gave his name as Reginald Augustus Sussmitch, aged 20, was arrested on the wharf by the police yesterday, after an endeavour to leave the Awatea through the.gunuale. He is to be charged with stowing away, and was discovered on the vessel soon after she left Sydney. He was found on deck on Saturday night last, and was given accommodation in a tourist class cabin. It was intended to hand him over to the police when the vessel arrived yesterday, but after coming down to breakfast and eating a hearty meal—he hid himself. In spite of efforts of police and Customs officials who searched cabins, wardrobes, bathrooms, lockers, lifeboats, shaft tunnels, engine-room, and the space round the steering gear, the whereabouts of the stowaway remained a mystery. Both gangways were watched until the man was arrested. It appears that ho chose for his hide-out. one of the ship’s stacks, as he was covered with soot. Just before he was arrested he was seen escaping by a group of stewards, who immediately signalled the police on the wharf.

He will appear in the Magistrate's Court this morning.
