WEEK-END YACHTING AT PAREMATA

Seventeen Races Sailed FOUR CHAMPIONSHIPS DECIDED Fino weather during the week-end enhanced the success of the I’aremata Boating Club’s Easter regatta, which concludes to-day. Seventeen events were sailed and the championships for all four classes were decided. There were many spectators, including visitors as well as competitors from neighbouring clubs, among whom were representatives from Wanganui and the commodore of the Tauranga Yacht and Power Boat Club, Mr. T. Connor. Saturday’s conditions were not good as the easterly breeze was fluky, and in tlie afternoon races nearly all boats were becalmed shortly after the start. The out-going tide and complete absence of wind at Shearer’s point carried many boats backward, and at one stage there were almost 30 boats helplessly waiting for a lift. In the handicap events this resulted in the scratch boats catching the first away about 200 yards from the starting line. Similar conditions prevailed on Sunday, the wind was again light and fluky r from the east, in the morning, but in the afternoon what breeze there was came out of the north-west. All the championship events were started from Moorhouse’s buoy to avoid difficulty in starting against the tide in the channel. The Championships. The start of the Rona Jellicoe regatta championship was made in a calm and the boats drifted over the line for nearly five minutes before getting under way. This race was won by Watti, who took 2.45.59 to cover the course. There was a flat calm in Browne’s Bay and down the channel to the finishing line. There was some doubt whether the Watti could finish within the time limit of three hours as the tide turned, about 5 p.m. and progress was slow against the current. The Takapuna class did not finish the' Duncan Cup race within the time. The race was abandoned and will be sailed again at 1.45 this afternoon, and the Watti handicap will not be sailed. The start of the Idle Along championship was the finest sight of the day yesterday, when 19 boats went away well bunched and with spinnakers set. This championship was won by the Evans Bay Boat Pegaway, who finished over four minutes ahead of Valhalla. Good work by R. Smith, for’ard hand, was largely responsible for Pegaway’s win.
