LABOUR PARTY
Annua! Conference Opens on Monday
RECORD ATTENDANCE OF DELEGATES
The annual conference of the New Zealand Labour Parity, which will open in Wellington on Monday, will be attended by a larger number of delegates than any previous conference. The attendance of 220 delegates last year was a record, but that number will be greatly exceeded and very probably more than doubled ithis year. The headquarters of the party knows for certain of over 400 delegates who will be attending the conference, but advice it has received from ithe affiliated organisations indicates that the number will be nearer 500. Hitherto the party has held its conferences in the Trades Hall in Vivian Street, but the increase in the number of delegates has necessitated the use of a larger building and the Town Hall has been secured. The conference will last for four days. Proceedings will open with addresses of welcome by Mr. J. O. Johnson on behalf of the Wellington Labour Representation Committee, and by the acting-Prime Minister, Hon. P. Fraser, on behalf of the Government. The presidential address will be given by the Rev. C. L. Carr, M.P. These addresses will be followed by the appointment of committees to deal with remits relating to the platform, rules and constitution of the party; finance; organising and propaganda work; industrial legislation; social and general legislation; unemployment; land and agriculture; education; housing; and other industries. The conference will probably adjourn on the Monday afternoon to allow committees 1o consider the remits referred to them and prepare reports for submission to the full conference on Tuesday morning.
The election of the national officers of ‘the party will most likely take place on Tuesday.
