BAN ON COMMUNISTS
Victorian Labour Party NEW ZEALAND PRAISED (Received March 27, 12.30 a.m.) Melbourne, March 20. The annual conference of the Victorian Labour Party to-day rejected by 151 rotes to 32 the proposal of the Communist Party for a United Front at the next Federal election. Bitter attacks were made on the Communists’ tactics at previous elections. It was reported to the conference that the executive of the party had decided that in no circumstances must any member of the party be associated with members of the Communist Party or its subsidiaries, nor in the advocacy of a United Front. Any member so offending would automatically be expelled. An attack also was made by the president of the Australasian Council of Trades Unions, Mr. A. E. Monk, on the Labour Premiers of Tasmania. Queensland and ’Western Australia, for their failure to implement legislation for the introduction of a 40-hour week. Several speakers praised tiie work of the New Zealand Labour Government in the interests of the workers, and said it was an example to Labour Governments in Australia.
