CHIFUKU MARU AT AUCKLAND. From Japan, tlie Y.K.K. Line steamer Chlfukii Marti reached Auckland late on Thursday night. She is due at Wellington next Tuesday morning and will leave hero again the following day for Lyttelton Bluff. Dunedin and Timaru to discharge and load. SHIPS FOR THE ANTIPODES. Liners and cargo vessels for service in Australian and New Zealand waters are much in the news these days both as regards work under construction and tonnage recently ordered, remarks the “Syren and Shipping.” Prominent among these are the additions to the fleet of the Port Line (Commonwealth and Dominion Line. Limited), London. The latest “Port,” the motorship Port Jackson (10.500 tons dw.), was launched recently by Swan, Hunter and Wigham Richardson, Limited, Wallsend. Speaking after the launch, Mr. J. Denhant Christie, chairman of the builders, said that a little more than three years ago tlie Port Chalmers was launched from their Wallsend yard, and the order given 12 months earlier by their friends, the Commonwealth and Dominion Line, came ag a first glimpse of sunshine after the worst depression ever known in shipbuilding. Eighteen months later the Port Townsville was launched. The companies which combined to form the Commonwealth and Dominion Line, now the Port Line, were, lie believed, the first British owners in the Australian trade, and to-day they were still flrst in that trade. In recent years Swan, Hunter had had the good fortune to build eight of their ships—three in the last three years. Commenting on the industry’s improved position, Mr. Christie held that the outlook for ship-building today compared with three or four years ago was very much more hopeful, and the prospects we’re that 1937 would be a busier year than had been known for a long period Replying for the owners, Mr. H. W. Corry remarked that Swan, Hunter and Wigham Richardson were laying down another ship for his company on the berth which had been vacated by the Port Jackson. An important feature of the ' a t‘ c F ship is that she is designed to the latest practice with a view to the carriage of chilled beef, as well as for the transport of all other kinds o£ perishable produce.
