PAREMATA YACHTING REGATTA

Big Fields on First Day

FINE WEATHER, BUT LITTLE BREEZE

Once again visiting yachts and their crews have invaded Paremata for the Paremata Boating Club's Easter regatta, which began yesterday. The weather was fine and there was a light breeze from the north for the start of the morning races, but at the turn of the tide the wind changed to the south and stayed in that quarter for the remainder of the day. There were nearly (iO boats competing, largely comprised of Idle Alongs, but with a fair sprinkling of 14-footers, there being rather more of the latter class than last year. The regatta will be continued to-day and to-morrow, and will end on Monday, with a full day’s racing each day.

In spite of printed instructions describing the course and issued by the committee, four boats in the Paremata Handicap, for Idle Alongs, were disqualified for rounding the wrong buoy. The southerly breeze almost dropped away in the afternoon, and the boats experienced some difficulty in getting away against the outgoing tide. The breeze freshened slightly about 2 o’clock, but was never strong enough for good racing Impudence could not give Watti five minutes in the afternoon, being beaten home by nearly two minutes. A good entry of 22 Idle Alongs started in the Mayfair Handicap, which was won by Valkyrie (9min.), which beat Idle Along (3.30) by 25 seconds. Owing to a decision regarding a protest against, Juanette not being reached only the first four places for the Quirke Memorial Plaque are definite.
