M.C.C. v. New Zealand at Basin Reserve TENNIS, GOLF, ROWING There is a varied programme of sporting events for Easter week-end, with all branches of outdoor activity well catered for. The M.C.C. v. New Zealand cricket match at the Basin Reserve, and tennis, bowling, and golf tournaments will attract many who have not moved further afield for the holiday. Rugby Football. Easter will be marked by the first of the Rugby football games of the year. The Athletic Football Club, which is celebrating its diamond jubilee, has arranged a programme of sporting and picnic events for the week-end. The new gymnasium, Arlington Street, is to be officially opened this morning. In the afternoon the annual match between Athletic and Hui Mai will be played at Athletic Park. A jubilee dinner is 1 j be held this evening. To-morrow a motor drive and picnic will be held, and on Monday the jubilee will conclude with a parade,_ addresses, a sports programme, a jubilee match against Wellington, and a jubilee dance at night. Other Rugby matches arranged are Miramar v. Gladstone, Greytown v. Eastbourne and Wanganui v. Eastbourne. At Palmerston North the annual Spillane and Brennan Cup tournament will be begun. The draw is as follows: Wellington Marist v. St. Patrick’s; Hamilton Marist v. Gisborne Marist; Wanganui Marist v. Hastings Celtic; Napier Marist v. Gisborne Celtic. On Monday’ the winners will play the winners and the losers the loser. Cricket. 'The M.C.C. v. New Zealand cricket match will be concluded at the Basin Reserve to-day. The visitors will be entertained at dinner after the match. The match between Wellington and Hastings for the Gannet Cricket Cup, begun yesterday, will be continued on Monday. Golf. The qualifying rounds of the Wellington provincial golf championships are being decided at Miramar to-day, and the Manor Park, Shandon and Judgeford elube are also holding tournaments. Racing. The Feilding and Wairarapa Racing Clubs’ meetings and the Hawera Trotting Club’s meeting will be held to-day and on Monday. Tennis. If the weather is favourable there will be a feast of tennis. The Easter championship tournament of the Wellington Lawn Tennis League is to begin to-day, the Wellington Lawn Tennis Association will conduct its Easter tournament at Miramar, and the New Zealand junior tennis championships, postponed from Timaru because of the infantile paralysis epidemic, will also be held at Miramar. Rowing. The interprovincial eight-oared rowing contest will be held on Port Nicholson at 10 o’clock this morning. Otago will be defending its title, and the other entrants are: Wellington, Wanganui, Auckland, Southland, Canterbury and East Coast. Spectators will be able to follow the race over the Koro Koro course from the train. A North Island v. South Island match will be rowed later in the morning. Yachting. 'J’he annual four-day yachting regatta at Paremata will be continued to-day and to-morrow, and will conclude on Monday. Bowls. The Easter rinks bowling tournaments being held in Wellington and the Hutt Valley will be continued to-day. The Hutt Valley tournament for the McArthur Shield will conclude on Monday. Section plav in the Wellington tournament will be completed on Monday, and jhe post-section jilay will be held next Saturday. Association Football. The first Association football match of the season is to take place on Monday afternoon at the Porirua Hospital grounds. Mr. G. F. Aers, sole selector of senior teams for the Wellington Football Association having arranged a trial game to season players he has in training for the visit of the English amateurs this season. An endeavour is also being made to arrange a match, Marist v. Hospital, at Porirua, on the same afternoon.

Tramping. Easter is always an active time for

trainpers, and members of the tramping chibs in the Wellington district tire enjoying the holiday with packs up. Forty-two members of the Tararua club, tinder Mr. J. Ililkie, left at 8 a.m. yesterday by motor-bus for Paraparaumu, and thence by launch to Knpiti. Though this is the club’s only official party, private parties have gone to the Ohakune side of Ruapehu, and a number of small parties to the Tararuas. Twenty-nine members of the Paua club are visiting the Tongariro National Park, having taken hut accommodation with the idea of climbing Ruapehu and other peaks if the weather permits. Twenty left kj’ bus on Thursday evening, and the remainder are to go by private car on Monday. With ten pairs of skis, 30 trampers from the Hutt Valley club left on Thursday night as a special party to the Tongariro National Park at the Ohakune Hut. They are endeavouring to find new ski-ing fields on the Maungaheuheu and Waihimoa glaciers, and intend to climb Girdlestone. the most difficult peak in the park. Conditions being favourable, they hope to investigate the outlet of the crater lake. Sea Scouts. The annual sea scouts’ regatta is being held on the harbour to-day. Crews from Wellington. Nelson and Wanganui will be competing. Rifle Shooting. The South Island rifle championships are being held at Blenheim during Easter, and the Hawke’s Bay championships are also being held at Hastings.
