HOW TO SEW

a

Ruth Wyeth Spears

TRIM WITH FABRIC FLOWERS

(’)NE sees many new frocks with a certain richness in the use of trimming—especially fabric trimming, such as the flowers shown here. This dress is made in a rather heavy silk crepe and may be developed in a number of colours. Soft blues are especially good. Reds on the rust and coral side rather than those that lean toward purple, are a good choice. The green colourings are attractive with a dash of yellow in them. The fabric flowers that trim the bottom of the skirt and make the pockets will require a yard of the dress material. To make the flowers for the bottom of the skirt, cut a Cl-incb square of material, fold each square four times, as shown here in the diagram at the left and then cut in a curved line, as shown at A. When opened out this makes a circle witii scalloped edge. Place this right side down on two pieces of the fabric, with edges turned back as at B. Baste and then stitch as nt C. Trim the edge of the under material and clip between the scallops as at D. Turn right side out and baste around | the scallops as at. I-', to hold them in a | firm line while- being pressed. ; Sow mark a two-inch circle in the I

centre and gather around it. as at F. Draw the gathering thread up slightly and fasten firm!;- on the wrong side. To tack the flowers to the bottom of the skirt, sew them in several places through the gathers and between the scallops around the upper edge of the flower. The lower edges of the flowers extend below the bottom of the skirt. Cut. the material for the pockets a. half-inch larger each way than the piece used for the flowers at file bottom of the skirt. The pocket flowers are sewed to the eoslume around the sides and bottom by baud, witli stitches that do not. show on the right side.
