RETURN ON INVESTMENTS Sales recorded on Dominion Stock Exchanges yesterday are shown in the tollowing list. In the second column is gixeji the return based on the last annual dividend from investment at the quoted price. In calculating the return on shares in companies which pay their dividends out " side New Zealand the exchange rates have not been taken into consideration. the return on 4 per cent. Government ** >{ll includes redemption. In the case ot per cent, loans the return is lor the interest alone, and covers only the period for which the loans are tax-free:—-

Colombo Tea Auction By Telegraph—Press Association. Dunedin, March 17. Mr. L. M. Wright has received the following cabled report on the Colombo tea auction of March 16: Buying followed the quality of the offerings closely at yesterday’s sale of 2,250,00011). Medium and fine teas declined Id., while common grades were slightly easier, being 1-Sd. lower than last week. At next week’s sale 2,125,0001 b. have been catalogued for auction.

Provident Life Assurance Provident Life Assurance Co., Lid., whose headquarters are at. Dunedin, and which has brandies in A_ustralia. wrote 1591 new policies in tile ordinary branch last year for £377,600. The previous vear 1650 new policies were written for £342,052. Net premiums in the ordinary branch amounted to £69.510. as against £62,301 a year previously. Claims by death were £95 IS, apd by maturity £21,435. Surrenders required £10,859. against £12,569 a year previously. In the industrial branch 12.712 new policies were written for £515.033, compared wit it 15,302 in 1935 for £612,785 in 1935. Premium income was £184,901, as against £173.689 a year previously. Claims in this department were by death £29,590, and by maturity £47_.558. Surrenders were in the amount of £7968, as against £10,309 in 1935. Rent, interest and fees in all departments yielded £61,471, an increase of £llB4. The assurance fund of the ordinary department increased by £42,331 to £639,460, and of the industrial department by £62,918 to £778,186. Ordinary branch has assets of £644.201, and industrial branch assets of £827,204. Capital is £24,000, on which a dividend of 12 per cent, (of which 5 per cent, has been paid) is recommended. The dividend is the same as that paid for 1935.
