AEROPLANES COLLIDE
British Flyers Killed
Alexandria, February 5,
Two aeroplanes from the aircraftcarrier Glorious collided in mid-air directly above the hows of the destroyer Courageous. One of the aeroplanes nose-dived into the sea. Lieutenant G. A. Vardon and a telegraphist, Bert Overall, being killed.
The other machine was badly damaged. It circled for a while and then came down on the water safely. The occupants were unhurt. LUCKY AUSTRALIANS Hobart, February 6. The occupants of the Air Force aeroplane which was missing after the bad weather in the middle of the week. Pilot Officer Buscombe and Sergeant Gould, were found alive and well beside their wrecked Hawker Demon aeroplane in wild, hilly country near Waratah.
The men had an amazing escape from death. The aeroplane crashed into a hillside when the pilot was attempting to make a forced landing after the tip of one wing had struck a tree in a fog. The machine turned upside down, and Buscombe was trapped in the cockpit, but lie escaped with minor injuries. Gould was saved by his rubber vest, which he had inflated.
