DICKENS FELLOWSHIP

The monthly meeting of the Dickens Fellowship was held in Channing Hall, Wellington, this week, Mr. E. C. Smythe presiding. The programme was opened with a reading from “Dombey and Son,” Mr. Gordon Shakes and Mrs. Prince taking the part, of Carker and Mrs. Dombey respectively. “David Copperfield” was the book from which the next reading was taken, with Mr. Prince as David and Miss M, Brown, who made an excellent Dora. The main feature of the programme was a reading of the “Flight of Little Emily,” also from “David Copperfield,” by the secretary, Mrs. N. Cruttenden. An interesting article from “John o’ London” was read by Mrs. Lawrence and also an article from the current “Dickension” by Mr. E. C. Smythe. . A pleasing break between readings was provided by Signora Comparina, who sang several songs, accompanied by Miss Sybil Macindoe.

The dull days of winter are to be really brightened up by the colourful and gay tweeds that are to be so much the vogue this year. At Agnes Samson’s there is a suit of rough tweed in the loveliest shade of bright henna. It is very simply made with a straight skirt with low placed pleats. The beautifully cut coat, semi-littlng, has a narrow.upstanding collar merging into wide lapels and has two patch pockets. Another new suit is of a blackish green tweed gaily flecked with jade, yellow; red and bright blue. The straight skirt has a pleat at centre back and front, while the short coat with its fitting back lias pleated pockets and a belt across the back. Another suit is of loosely-woven tweed in very attractive tonings of brown, beige and fawn. The short coat has large patch pockets hemmed with a couching of brown wool which appears again round the collar and revers. Among the new hats are hats with brims and hats without, hats that are high with quills and wings, hats of velvet, rich and lustrous, hats of felt in every shade, hats of fur, the newest yet—in fact, all that is smartest and most up-to-date from the fashion centres of the world. Agnes Samson, Lambton Quay.—AdVt.,
