OBITUARY
Mrs. Margaret Casey
The death occurred on Sunday of an old and very much respected resident of Wellington, Mrs. Margaret Casey, at the residence of her daughter, Mrs. E. J. Pcare, of 68 Murphy Street. Mrs. Casey, widow of Mr. Janies Casey (who predeceased her by half n century), was born in Tralee, County Kerry, Ireland, 84 years ago, and, as .Miss Margaret Scanlon, came out to New Zealand by the ship Beddington (Captain Peck), arriving in Wellington on October 25, 1872, after a rough voyage which extended over 16 weeks. She was married here, and was a resident of Wellington during tbe whole of her long sojourn in New Zealand, witnessing a mere village grow into a modern city. Her surviving daughters are .Mrs. W. A. Nicholas, of .Sheffield, and Mrs. E. J. I’eare, of Wellington. Mr. Matthew J. Casey, .chief clerk and purchase officer of the city engineer's department, is a sou. There are nine grandchildren and- three great-grandchildren. Requiem mass will be celebrated in the Hill Street Basilica at 9 o'clock this morning, Mrs. E. Vance The death occurred suddenly on .Saturday of Mrs. Vance, wife of Mr. Ernest Vance, chief clerk of the Atlas Assurance Company. She recently suffered an attack of influenza, from which she appeared to be making a good recovery, when she had a relapse. resulting in heart failure. She resided at Hataitai for many years and in later years at Pitiotio Street, Day’s Bay. She was held in high regard in golfing circles, and was the captain of the Shandon Ladies’ Golf Club. The funeral was yesterday afternoon. The services at the mortuary chapel and the graveside were conducted by tlie Rev. Ronald Kreiff, of Eastbourne. Tlie chief mourners were the widower, Misses Ada and J. E. Howden, Mesdaines Webb and A. G. Cathie (sisters), Tlie pall-bearers were Messrs. R. S. Cheeseman (cousin,. I. Pears ami D. Pears (nephews). K. Webb (nephew). D Cathie (nephew), ami Cecil Howden (cousin). Among those present were Messrs. A. G. and O. Cathie. Captain Holm. J. Zacliariali. M, Archer, E. II Anderson. W. Dick. J. T. Kinvig, A. and H. Longmore. C. Mclntyre, C. F. Eggie, A. James, W. Richards, P. Mackay ami 11, Plimmer. The staff of the Atlas Insurance Company was represented by Messrs. ’I 1 . W. .Michelson and R. G. Atkinson. 'There were a great number of ladies present, including a representation of the Shandon Golf Club, and other societies, in which the deceased was interested on the, eastern side of tho harbour.
