HOUSEWIVES’ GUIDE

Prices Ruling To-day in Wellington

Housewives will be well advised to start immediately with the stocking of their larders with Christmas cake ingredients,

as an acute shortage is anticipated in the near future. This has been brought about by the trouble in Spain, the shipping dispute in California and the general increased demand for these commodities, with a consequent heavy drain on the limited supplies available. Almonds from Spain are becoming unprocurable, anil seeded raisins are becoming scarcer and much dearer. Supplies of Australian one and two crown sultanas are sold out, and many other such commodities are rapidly advancing in price.

Eggs remain firm at 1/5 a dozen for A grade and 1/4 for B grade retail. Special lines are selling at 2d. a dozen more than these prices. The wholesale price for A grade is 1/3 and for B grade 1/2. Markets were still well supplied with vegetables at yesterday's auction and prices generally remained fairly steady. Cabbages were once again at glut prices, however, and old potatoes were cheaper. A more plentiful supply of green peas reduced the price, while lettuces were in keen demand at very good prices to growers.
