GIFT AFTERNOON FOR THE MAORIS

The November meeting of the Lower Hutt Methodist ‘Women’s Missionary Auxiliary took the form of a gift afternoon for the Maoris. There was a splendid attendance, and the president, Mrs. Ballantyne, led the opening devotional service. A welcome was extended to Mrs. Hayes and Mrs. C. Jenkins, who have recently returned from abroad. Donations of clothing, toys and stationery were received, also several cash contributions. The Rewa Girls Club, Belmont, forwarded two peggy square cot-rugs and two parcels of clothing.

After tea had been served the secretary, Mrs. L. V. Phillips, spoke on her recent visit to the annual conference at Ashburton. She dealt with the business and devotional sessions in full and also summarised the addresses of the various speakers, including Sister Atawhai Wilcox (Maori Mission, New Plymouth), Rev. E. P. Blamires (president of conference), Rev. G. Laurensou (Home Mission Board), Rev. Scriven (Foreign Mission Board), and Rev. A. Cropp (Solomon Islands). The contributions received during the last eleven months amounted to £2773/2/3, showing an increase of £l9O/16/1 on the previous year. A report was given concerning home and overseas sisters, the Kurahuna Training School for Maori Girls, and the work of the literature, box, philatelic and gleanings departments. A hearty vote of thanks was passed to the speaker, and the meeting concluded with the Benediction. SUCCESSFUL SOCIAL Another very successful social was held recently in aid of the Miramar Public Kindergarten at the Airport Tearooms. The burial competition was won by Mrs. Hawker, and the “crazy express” by Misses Howard and Roberta. Songs were snug by Mrs. Trevor Goodwin, Mrs. Pengelly and Mrs. Upton, and Miss Nola Hyde gave elocutionary items. Sketches were given by Misses Peggy and Marie Porter, Marjorie Webster, Tbora Spence and Brenda Brent, all students of the Training College. On behalf of the committee, Mrs. O. G. Smith, president, presented all performers with small tokens of appreciation. The evening ended with a home-made supper served by the committee. The social committee of the Kilbirnle branch of the R.S.A. held a very successful card party on Tuesday evening at the headquarters, 15 Bay Road. The prizes for bridge were won by Mrs. B. C. Cull and. Mr. 8. O’Brien, and best score cards for “500” were returned by Mrs. A. Murray and Mr. Button. The chairman of the branch, Mr. Donald Gunn, thanked those present for their attendance. He also drew attention to next week’s card evening, when it is the intention of the ladies’ committee t 0 conduct a “Bring and Buy Stall” In aid of the Health Camp funds. The stall will be under the supervision of Mrs. Coira and Mrs. East.

The annual dinner and reunion of Chilton House old girls will be held nt Chilton St. James School. Lower Hutt, to-night.
