INJURIES TO HAND

Youth Claims Compensation Amounting to £lOOO

Damages amounting to £lOO2/12/for injuries he received while working in a factory at Petone were claimed by Norman John McDonald, aged 16, against J. Gadsen and Co., Ltd., in the Supreme Court, Wellington, yesterday. Plaintiff, who sued through Ins father, John McDonald, carpenter, was represented by Mr. C. A. L. Treadwell and Mr. R. E. Harding. Mr. 11. I. O’Leary, K.C., with him- Mr. M. D. Goodwin, appeared for defendant. Mr. Justice Blair presided. The statement of claim set out that plaintiff was employed by the company in operating a machine for stamping tinplate, and that on March 12 last year his right hand was injured in the machine. It was alleged that the injury was due Io the negligence of the company in allowing the machine to become out of order or out of repair. As an alternative to the claim of £lOO2 12/-, plaintiff asked for judgment for the amount found to be payable under the Workers Compensation Act.

The company denied negligence, but admitted that plaintiff was entitled to compensation under the Workers Compensation Act. At the conclusion of plaintiff’s evidence the court adjourned until Monday.
