PIG RECORDING

National Scheme a Stepping Stone Dominion Special Service. Palmerston North, September 16. The national pig recording scheme, and its relations to existing recording clubs, were discussed at yesterday’s meeting of the council of the New Zealand Pig Breeders’ Association in. Palmerston North. It was felt that with co-opera-tion for all concerned, the scueme would be of great benefit to the industry as a whole. It was announced that the strong criticism of the scheme from Waikato was due more than a little to a misunderstanding. It was stated that the scheme would become immediately operative, and chat

the recording work ot existing clubs would* be recognised as official, the same as recording done by Government officers. Stress was laid on the point that the scheme was really a stepping stone to greater things, and it breeders would view ic al such, they would find that it was a particularly • sound proposition, brought ■forward for the purpose of improving the industry. line rules for the new- scheme were read and approved, although the view was expressed that the wrong programme had been . started with, as instruction rather, than recording might have been more vital to the industry. Another view was that the benefits to the pig industry would be as great as the benefits of herd-testing to the dairy industry. Denmark had-vastly Improved her swine husbandry by adopting similar schemes. Although the association would probably be faced with increased costs, this would be set off by the benefits which would ' accrue to breeders. ' It was decided, on the recommendation of the Manawatu-Oroua Pig Records ing Club, that each club-be asked to send one delegate to a conference with representatives of the association, the chief aim of the conference being to frame a policy with the object of obtaining a levy’ of 2d. per pig on all pigs killed for export or local consumption, the funds to be used in promoting - the national scheme. Messrs. J. A. Russell, president, A- R. Gudopp (New' Plymouth) and R. C. raarkk (fukekohe) were appointed the association’s conference delegates.
