WORK FOR CHILDREN

\ • Presentation to Mr. W. Dick Nineteen years of service for the children attending Muritai School were recognised last evening when Mr. W. Dick, who has been a member of the school committee from 1917 until this year, was the recipient of a presentation at a public meeting. In making a presentation of a canteen of cutlery to Mr. and Mrs. Dick, “in recognition of services to Muritai School,” on behalf of citizens of the East Harbour, the Mayor of Eastbourne, Mr. E. W. Wise, reviewed the work Mr. Dick had done for the school, and said that for 10 years of his period on the committee he had been its chairman. Mr. Dick had always been an ardent supporter and an energetic worker in all matters in which the school had been concerned. During his term of office, 156 meetings had been held, and of these Mr. Dick had attended 149. Three or four of the seven from which he had been absent had been held while he was away in Sydney. Mr. Dick had retired because he felt that he had been a member of the committee for far too long, and because he thought that they should have sonic younger blood on the committee. That was a view with which they did not agree, and the parents could not let the opportunity pass without making some recognition of his services. Mrs. Dick had also done a great amount of work, and so was included in the presentation of a canteen of cutlery. Replying, Mr. Dick expressed deep thanks for the gift, and said that anything he had done had been for the school, and because he loved children. The opportunity was also taken to welcome the new headmaster, Mr. D. G. Wilson, and his wife. Dr. D. N. Isaacs, chairman of the school committee, in introducing Mr. Wilson, said he had come from Kaiapoi, with the highest credentials. He had served with the Canterbury Regiment, and he played golf, Mr. Wilson briefly responded. The gathering was organised by old pupils of Muritai School.
