MANAWATU SHOW

Dates of Spring Fixture Changed REFORM OF ASSOCIATION

Dominion Special Service. Palmerston North, September 15. The Manawatu and West. Coast A, and P. Association was advised to-day that his Excellency the Governor-General had accepted the association’s invitation to attend its annual spring show, and would be in Palmerston North on November 4. Owing to engagements iu Wellington, Lady Galway regretted that she could not accept the invitation, and neither of the other two days would be suitable owing to the arrival of Lord Hartington in New Zealand on November 5. Owing to the changed half-holiday in Palmerston North, the committee decided to alter the days of the _ show from November 4, 5 and 6, to November 5, t> and 7, in order to secure the advantage of the Saturday half-holiday, with stock on exhibition for the first two days, and a carnival on the last day. It was decided to advise his Excellency of the circumstances which had necessitated changing the dates, and invite him to attend the show on the day most convenient to him. , Recommendations formulated by the special committee set up to go into the working of the association, approved at the July meeting of the general committee and confirmed at the August meeting, were submitted for adoption at to-day s meeting, which was an extraordinary one held in conjunction with the general committee meeting. Retention of Grounds. The first, that the present grounds be retained, was carried. The second, that the disposal of the Featherston Street property be deferred, gave rise to considerable discussion, the general opinion being that the value of the property would greatly increase as time went on. and the association would be able to reap more money from its sale later than at present. Mr. J. A. Mitchell, who voted against the motion, which was carried, said it was a very debatable point. He thought it better for the association to realise on the property as sooif as possible. The third recommendation regarding the" method of electing the vice-president was carried. Constitution of Committee. A further recommendation that rule 9 be rescinded and that the following rule be inserted in its place gave rise to discussion: —"The finance committee shall consist of nine members of the general committee, exclusive of ex-ofiicio members, and shall have such control over the property and finances of the association and such powers as may be entrusted to them by the general committee. A certain number of the finance committee shall retire annually, but will be eligible for re-election. The first four members to retire shall retire by ballot on the date of the annual meeting in 1937 and the remaining five members shall automatically retire on the date of the annual meeting in 1938. Thereafter automatically four members shall retire in one year and five members the next year. At its first meeting the general committee shall elect from its members a sufficient number to fill the vacancies on the finance committee due to retirement or resignation. The finance committee as constituted at the date of the passing of this rule shall remain in office until the date of the succeeding annual meeting.” , , Mr. M. A. Conway moved an amendment that members retiring from the finance committee be not eligible for reelection. He said this would ensure new faces on the committee, and would g've the members of the general committee an opportunity of thoroughly knowing the internal workings of the association. Other speakers opposed the amendment on the grounds that there should be continuity in the personnel of the committee, and members should not vacate office until proposals which they sponsored had been brought to fruition. Mr. J. A. Nash regarded the proposal in the amendment a s a very retrograde step. The vote was declared oven, with 18 votes both for and against, but a recount was called for and on that being taken the amendment was lost by 20 votes to 17. The original motion was then carried. Mr. Mitchell gave notice of his intention to place before the next general committee meeting an amendment to the effect that three members of the finance committee retire each year. Hurricane Damage. The Palmerston North Chamber of Commerce wrote offering to support the suggestion by Mr. E. O. Hurley, Wellington, a former Mayor of Palmerston North, that the Government be approached for a grant toward the rebuilding of the association’s stands and other appointments damaged in last February's hurricane. It was decided to advise Mr. Hurley that such steps were being taken. The Prime Minister, the Rt. Hon. M. J. Savage, wrote intimating that careful consideration would be given the resolution passed by the Hawke's Bay A. and P. Association expressing alarm at the rajrid disappearance of New Zealand forests and urging the Government to control further exports of New Zealand native timber. JUDGES APPOINTED Palmerston North.
