WANGANUI CARNIVAL

Christmas and New Year AIR PAGEANT PROPOSED Dominion Special Service. Wanganui, September 15. “We hope this carnival is going to be the biggest ever attempted in Wanganui, and for that matter, the biggest in New Zealand,” said Dr. G. .1. Adams, chairman of the Wanganui Christmas and New Year Carnival Committee, which met last night and discussed several reasons why an aero pageant should be held in the city in conjunction with the carnival. “We want only the best, and I can see no reason why an aero pageant cannot be staged,” continued Dr. Adams. “I thin.g the Government would be behind us and it may be possible to have military planes in attendance. This carnival is to bring the rest of New Zealand to Wanganui.” The president of the Wanganui Tourist and Development League, Mr. W. J. Gibson Hughes, said the proposed pageant would be something national, to attract pilots from all over New Zealand. “We should stress the point that this is not entirely a parochial effort, for Wanganui is attempting to nationalise a really firstclass carnival. In the first place, its object is to attract visitors to the city. At a meeting of the Wanganui Aero Club also held last night, the secretary, Mr. S. A. McCallum, said that a pageant had been suggested to him, but he had informed the league that the holiday period was an unsuitable time for the event. Mr. S. G. Whittail was then dele-* gated to attend the league meeting, and he returned latpr reporting that a deputation intended to wait upon the Aero Club concerning the pageant. This committee consisted of Dr. Adams and Messrs. C. T. Young (secretary) and Hughes. The committee set up the following sub-committee to arrange a suitable programme for Boxing Day, incorporating Maori activities, speed-boat and rowing events: Messrs. R. Bell (Wanganui Motor-boat Club), W. L. McEvoy and Webster (rowing). The carnival finance committee was elected as follows: Messrs. W. J. Gibson Hughes (chairman). R. Bell, E. J. Crotty, and a nominee of the Wanganui Amateur Athletic and Cycling Association. The carnival is to commence on December 26 and: to conclude on January 3.
