RATE COLLECTION

Suggestion at Vogeltown

A suggestion that the Wellington City Council should allow a 5 per cent, discount for prompt payment of rates was made at the last meeting of the Vogeltown and Mornington Municipal Electors’ Association. Those who supported the proposal contended the prompt collection of rates would enable the council to reduce its overdraft ehnrjxess. but on the other hand it was argued that allowance for the discount WQiild have to be made jn the estimates to provide against possible maximum demand for it, which would affect adversely ratepayers of smaller means. No action was taken. Pleasure was expressed at the commencement of road improvements at the northern end of Mills Road, and at Farnham Street lieing repaired. Correspondence is still passing between the association and the city, council on the subject of improved transport to the district. The association has been successful in its endeavours to have the 8.30 a.m. and 0 a.m. tramcars from Brooklyn terminus diverted to Lambton station via Customhouse Quay, so that passengers may go to the ferries without walking from Lamliton Quay.
