OBITUARY

Mr. Richard Moore Mr. Ridin rd Moore, formerly a member of the Legislative Council, died on Saturday at his home at Cashmere, Ulii'istchuich. in his eighty-eightli year. For more tliaii 50 years Mr. Moore continued his public life with work «>u local bodies and in Parliament, and up to two years ago he still held the position of chairman of the Lands Committee of the Legislative Council. Mr. Moore arrived at Lyttelton as an infant in the ship Steadfast in 1851. At tile age of 21 he began business at Kaiapoi as a wheelwright and coaclibuilder. After some years he disposed of the business mid acquired an Interest in the Kaiapoi Pnalnce Company, which did a considerable shipping trade, ultimately taking over complete control. He was one of the first men to acquire an interest in the Kaiapoi Woollen Company, and lie also promoted two building societies. Mr. Moore showed a great interest in sport while he was in Kaiapoi. and became a member of a boating elub formed there, and was president for a time of the rifle club. Very soon after his thirtieth birthday. jlr. Moore began his public life. He wns elected a member of the Kaiapoi school committee, and held the office of 'chairman for 14 years. He was Mayor from 1884 to 18S7. He also served a term as chairman of the Waimiiknriri Harbour Board, and. until about six years ago. was a member <>.f the Lyttelton Harbour Board, of which lie was chairman for two y ; enrs. The only official position he held on local bodies in Canterbury very recently wits that of sinking fund 'commissioner of the North Canterbury Hospital Board. Mr. Moore's Parliamentary ■ career liegan iu 18!K), when he was elected member for Kaiapoi, His second term in the House of Representatives ended in 1900, and in all he spent six years in the House.
